ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to determine the proximate nutrient and pliyiocheiiueal contents of coconut fruit samples from the east, west. South and North of Nigeria. the mliv acids content, the triglycerol and total cholesterol contents were also analyzed. Phytochemical content were detected using the polar and non Polar solvents. This findings revealed that sample from the north had significant (P<0.05) highest content ol moiSture (42.92±0.01%). ash (5.5 i0.07%). Fibre (1 .36±0.00%), total cholesterol (II .81±0.02mg/I 01) nil), Vitamin (' and potassium (22.29±0.00mg/i 00g and 32. 110.00mg/I O0g).'I 'he Vitamin U content was higher than values Found in Indian sample (7.00 ing! 1 00g). and An a sample (3mg/lOOg). Whereas, potassium content was lower than values iii American samples (353 nig/ 1 OOg). 'I'he sample From southern Nigeria was significantly highest (I 4.0±0.05%) in protein calipered to oilier locations  Nigerian. '1'hcsc protein Values of Nigerian coconut were higher than samples from india (6.8%) and America (3.6%). Samples From eastern Nigeria had highest fat (70:08+0.04%), energy (727.24+0.00Keal ) and Fatty acid (caprylic:8.60±0.00%;Lauric:41 .30±0.14%;Palniitic: 13.00±0.14%;Stcaric:3.6+0.07°A) contents. The lat content was lound higher than in coconut samples from India (62.2%) and American (39. 1°A). 'Triglyceride level was highest in western Nigeria sample (1 61 .51 i0.00nig/dl ) compared to other Nigerian samples (p<O.OS). '[he detected phytoclienuical contents in these different samples of coconut flesh in the North. South, Fast and West oF Nigeria indicated that Nigerian coconut seed Flesh can be regarded as functional foods. This is because the presence of significant amouious of antioxidants in these samples can provide desirable health benefits, such as prevention. diseases i.,e cancer, cardiovascular diseases, beyond their basic nutrient value. thus, the use of coconut seed flesh should be encouraged and incorporated in daily menu.
