ABSTRACT
The study has
investigated the effect of the corrosion inhibition of mild steel in alkaline
medium using organic inhibitors which include ethanol extract of Vernonia
Amygdalina, Chromolaena Odorata, Azadirachta indica and producing a model to
determine the corrosion penetration rate using the corrosion parameters of
temperature, inhibitor concentration and time of exposure. 1'lic study
therefore aimed to assess the effect of Vernonia Amygdalina extracts,
Chromolaena Odorata extract, Azadirachta indica extract on corrosion inhibition
of mild steel of 70mm x12it x 12mm immersed in 0.5M NaOH solution. A varied
dose of organic extracts of 2m1,4m1,6m1,8rn1,lOml are used as an inhibitor in
this study and weight loss was assessed for corrosion rate and set out a model
that will control any variation of corrosion parameters. The results obtained
show that various concentrations of the ethanol extract of the inhibitors were
capable of inhibiting the corrosion of mild steel in NaOH meduim. The
efficiency of inhibition of the extract was found to increase with increase in
concentration o the inhibitors. This study reveals that Chromolaena Odorata and
Azadirachta indica has a better inhibition property of 74% than the Vernonia
amygdalina extract with efficiency of 70%. The results suggest that the ethanol
extract of the inhibitors can actually be used as organic corrosion inhibitor.
