ABSTRACT
This study
assessed isolation and characteristics of micro organinism from formites (Door
Handles) of female students of Michael Okpara University of Agricutlture,
Umudike. The Samples used were collected within Michael Okpara University of
Agriculture Umudike. A total of 10 samples was collected from door handles from
different blocks of female hostel with the aid ofsterile swab sticks moistened
with sterile normal saline. It was then introduced into a bijou bottle
containing sterile peptone water, shaken, and loosely capped. The bijou bottle
were covered with cellophane. Specimens were also labeled appropriately
reflecting the number, location, and date and then transported to the
Laboratory for microbiological analyses plugged and transported to laboratory
and incubated overnight at 37°C.A total of 10 samples were examined, the
isolated microorganisms were Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus,
Pseudomonas aeruginosa, ShigellaSpp, Streptococcus Spp. Aspergillusniger and
Aspergillusflavus. Staphylococcus aureus(24.3%) had the most frequency of
occurrence closely followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa(2l ,6°/o) followed by
Escherichia coli (16.2%) and Shigellaspecies (16.2%) followed by Streptococcus
species (8.1%) followed by Aspergillusniger(f>.4%), and Aspergillusflavus
(8.1%) with the least occurrence. The isolation of these organisms from fomites
in this study indicates that they can be vehicles for disease transmission.
