ABSTRACT
This study investigated the
micronutrient composition, amino acid profile, phytochemical constituent and
antioxidant properties of oha (pterocarpus mildbraedii) leaves, a traditional
vegetable consumed in Nigeria, with a focus on its potential contribution to
the diet of children aged 4-6 years. The research analyzed the ami ic acid
profile, vitamin content, mineral composition, antioxidant properties, and
phytochemical constituents of oha leaf, comparing the results with FAO
standards and findings from related studies on similar leafy vegetables. The amino
acid analysis revealed that while oha leaf contains essential amino acids,
their levels fall below the FAO recommendations for children. Similarly, the
vitamin (A, Bl, C) and mineral (calcium, magnesium, potassium) contents were
found to be lower than the established standards. However, the leaf
demonstrated promising antioxidant properties, with significant DPPH free
radical scavenging activity (150.09±0.02) and moderate FRAP (71.40±0.03) and
ABTS (40.72±0.04) values, suggesting potential health benefit related to
oxidative stress reduction. Phytochemical analysis indicated a relatively high
alkaloid content (1.25±0.04), moderate flavonoid levels (0.91±0.03), and lower
amour t of phenols (0.08±0.02) and steroids (0.12±0.02). These findings suggest
possible medicinal properties but also necessitate caution regarding
consumption amounts, particularly for children. However, while oha leaf
contributes valuable nutrients an'- bioactive compounds to the diet, it should
not be relied upon as a sole source or essential nutrients for growing
children. Recommendations include promoting dietary diversification, exploring
fortification possibilities, optimizing cultivation and preparation methods,
and conducting further research on bioavailability and long-term health effects.
These findings and recommendations aim to enhance the nutritional impact of oha
leaf in the Nigerian diet and improve overall health outcomes in populations
consuming this traditional vegetable.
