Microbiological Evaluation Of Daily Used Handkerchief From Selected Individuals In Umudike, Nigeria:- Anyanwu, Oluomachi F
ABSTRACT
Handkerchief is typically a hemmed square
ofthe thin fabric which can be carried in the pocket or handbag and which is
intended for personal hygiene purposes, such as wiping ones face, hands or
blowing ones nose. This study was carried out to determine the microbial
quality of randomly selected handkerchief in Umudike. Umuahia, Abia State from
selected individuals. The randomly selected handkerchiefs were analyzed
microbiologically using standard methods. Microbiological examination showed presence
of bacteria and fungi isolates. Four bacteria species were identified;
Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia coli, and Shigella.
Two fungi species were isolated; Aspergillus niger and Aspergillusflavus. The
total bacteria plate count of bacteria ranges from 1.05 x 10’ to 0.57 x 10’.
Staphylococcus aureus (36.8%) has the highest percentage occurrence while
klebsiella pneumonia (10.5%) has the least percentage occurrence. A. niger
(33.3%) has the least % occurrence while A. flavus has the highest %
occurrence. The presence of these microbes in the used handkerchief has been
traced to poor hygiene practices by handlers. It is recommended that;
Handkerchief should not be used more than a day and individuals with flu should
have separate handkerchief or tissue paper for controlling the flow of the flu
and another for wiping sweat offtheir face.
