Microbiological And Physicochemical Parameters Of Swimming Pools In Umuahia:- Onyemereibeya, Peace C
ABSTRACT
A total offive (5) samples ofswimming pools from
5 different hotels in Umuahia were analysed for microbiological and
physicochemical parameters. Bacterial isolates in these pool samples were
determined by cultures. The isolated bacteria include; Escherichia coli,
Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella species, Salmonella species, Klebsiella
pneumoniae, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were the most frequently isolated
organisms with the highest percentage occurrence of 20.8% while the least
percentage occurrence were recorded for Staphylococcus epidermidis and
Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Fungal isolates in these pool samples were determined
by culture. The isolated fungi include; Aspergillus Niger and Rhizopus
Stolonifer. These organisms had equal frequency with the percentage occurrence
of 50% each. The physicochemical parameters analysed include; temperature, pH
value, conductivity and total titratable acidity. Swimming pools should be
properly monitored to maintain the water quality.
