Knowledge Of Fruits And Vegetables Related Pratices And Anthropometric Status Of Teachers In Private Secondary School In Umuahia North Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria:- Ede, Blessing S
ABSTRACT
Consumption of
fruits and vegetables has associated with the prevention of non-communicable
diseases such as obesity. Obesity has increasingly become a public health
problem in both developed and developing country. This study determined the
knowledge of fruits and vegetables related practices and anthropometric status of teachers in
private secondary school in Umuahia North Local Government
Area,
Abia State. A cross-sectional study was conducted on
223 teachers. A self-administered questionnaire was used to assess the
socio-economic status, knowledge of fruits and vegetables, frequency of fruits and vegetables intake and
anthropometric indices of the respondent. The data was analysed using
Statistical Package Service Software (SPSS) version 25.0. Descriptive
statistics were computed for variables. Findings of the study showed that many (75.2%) of the respondent were female, while less than half (24.8%) were male. Less than half (33.1%) of the respondents were between the age of
25-30 years, (23.4%) 19-24 years and (20.7%) 31-36 years of age. Majority
(98.6%) of the respondent were Christians while only (1.4%) were Muslim. Less than half (30.0%) of the respondent estimated monthly income
was between ₦51,000- ₦60,000, about (28.6%) earned ₦61,000- ₦70,000, while
(17.6%) earned ₦41,000- ₦50,000. Only
few (13.6%) earned ₦31,000- ₦40,000 and (8.6%) earned less than ₦30,000 per
month. Good number (75.2%) of the teachers had good knowledge of fruits and
vegetables, while (19.3%) had average knowledge and few (5.5) had poor
knowledge of fruits and vegetables. However, the result indicates that
prevalence of overweight (30.3%) and obesity of (35.8%) among private secondary
school teachers. More than half (55.9%) of the respondent had a normal weight
while few (8.3%) were underweight. The prevalence of obesity is high and
Strategies to reduce the risk of obesity among school teachers should focus on increasing the intake of healthy diet
as well as increase intake of fruits and vegetables.
