ABSTRACT

The potential of Urena Lobata bark for the adsorption of Ni(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution was investigated in a batch adsorption process. Various physiochemical parameters such as pH, dosage, particle size, metal ion concentration, contact time, and temperature were studied. The adsorbent study exhibits high efficiency for the metal ions adsorption. The equilibrium adsorption data were described by Langmuir, freundlich, Temkin,Dubinin — Radushkevich, FloryHuggins, Hakins Jura, andHaley isotherm models. The coefficient of determination of the models were high with freundlich providing best data description for adsorption of the metal ions onto UrenaLobata bark. The kinetic models employed to determine the rate and mechanism of adsorption processes are pseudo first order, pseudo second order, Elovich, intra - particle diffusion, with pseudo second order providing the best data description for adsorption ofthe metal ions onto UrenaLobatabark. While the diffusion is controlled by liquid film diffusion mechanism. The maximum adsorption capacity for Ni(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) ions are 50 mg/g each. Also the adsorption showed maximum adsorption at pH 6, and contact time at 40 mins and 120 mins for Ni(II), and Pb(II) ions respectively. Different thermodynamic parameters like Gibbs free energy (AG), enthalpy (AH), and entropy (AS), ofthe adsorption process have also been evaluated. The positive values of (AH) for the system confirm the endothermic nature ofthe adsorption. The positive values of (As) observed for the adsorption of the metal ions molecules suggested the increased randomness at the solid solution interface during adsorption process, the negative value of(AG) indicates that the process was spontaneous and feasible. The result indicates that the adsorbent studied was found to be a promising alternative for the adsorption ofNi(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions.
