Investigation Of Perceived Causes Of Poor Performance Of Students In Chemistry In External Examination In Umuahia North Local Government Area, Abia State
ABSTRACT
Chemistry education has been identified
to be one of the major bedrock for the transformation of our national economy,
and hence must be accorded adequate attention. In the study, an attempt was
made in ascertaining the remote causes for the poor performances reported in
recent times in chemistry at the senior secondary level of education. 240
persons were selected through random sampling for the study. They were made up
of SS3 students and teacher. Two questionnaires titled investigation of
perceived causes of poor performance of students were constructed for both
teachers and students. A thirty — one item research questionnaire for the
teachers and twenty item research item questionnaire for the student built on a
four (4) point scale was used for data collection. Simple statistical tool such
as frequency, percentage and mean were used to answer to the research
questions. The study found out that teachers qualification, method of teaching,
teachers teaching experience, use of instructional materials, gender of the
students and the different type of schools influence the performance of
chemistry students. The researcher recommended that government should recruit
more qualified chemistry teachers and students should be taken to a well equipped
practical laboratory to boost their motivation and interest for chemistry.
