ABSTRACT

Effect of 0.0001 — 0.0005M spariloxacin and norfloxacin on the corrosion of zinc in 0.01 — 0.05M H2SO4 at 303, 313 and 323K has been studied using weight loss method. The results of the study revealed that sparfioxacin and nortloxacin are good inhibitors of corrosion of zinc in H2SO4. Kinetics and thermodynamic considerations of the inhibited corrosion reaction of zinc revealed that the inhibited corrosion reaction of zinc in H2SO4was first order and was controlled by activated complex. (enthalpy change is positive, entropy change is negative, activation energy is positive). Adsorption of the inhibitors on zinc surface was found to be spontaneous and proceeded via chemical adsorption mechanism (Free energy of adsorption > 4OKJ/mol). Inhibition efficiencies of the inhibitors were comparable to each other and their activities were found to be dependent on temperature, concentration of the inhibitor and concentration of H2SO4. Adsorption of norfioxacin and sparfloxacin on zinc electrode were found to fit classical adsorption isotherm of Langmuir.
