ABSTRACT

The Biochemical, Nutritional, heavy metal, and Antimicrobial strength of Pleurotus squarrosulus from log substrate of Mangifera indica were investigated. The investigation was done in the science laboratory of Emery Research at Ahiaeke Ndume Ibeku Umuahia, Abia state. Phytochemical composition of P. squarrosulus showed that the flavonoid content of the fruit-bodies was 0.58±0.00%,alkaloid,5.10±0.00%,saponin,2.75±0.01%,Anthocyanin,0.84±0.01%, tannin, 1.29±0.02%,phenol,l.ll±0.01% and HCN was 0.26±0.00. Similarly, the proximate composition in percentage for P. squarrosulus were; Moisture, 5.40±0.00, fat 1.78±0.01%, protein 16.35±0.08, crude fiber 7.28±0.03 and carbohydrate 59.50±0.06%. The results of the mineral, composition showed that the studied mushroom was rich in sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. The result of the vitamins showed that P. squarrosulus had higher vitamin C (19.27mg/100g) followed by vitamin A (6.35mg/100g). The least vitamin was obtained from thiamine (Vit.Bi) 0.227±0.(U .The trace elements were low in lead, copper and cadmium. This fact confirms that the studied mushroom was edible. The result of the antimicrobial shows that the aqueous extract had no activity against the test organisms, the- ethanolic extract inhibited P. aeurogenosa, Salmonella typi, S, aeurus at different concentrations. The result obtained indicates that P. squarroullus from log substrate of Mangifera indica are safe to consume based on their nutritional potentialities as they can also be exploited in the manufacturing of drugs.
