Indicators and Problems of Insecure School Environment in Public Secondary Schools in Rivers State, Nigeria:- Uzoka, Rose N.
ABSTRACT
This study investigated
indicators and problems of insecure school environment in public secondary
schools in Rivers State. The study design was descriptive survey design. The
population ofstudy involved 12,367 principals and teachers out ofwhich a sample
of504 was selected. For the study through stratified random sampling technique.
Two research questions and two hypotheses wereformulated to guide the study. A
17 item questionnaire was developed for data collection. Of504 copies
ofquestionnaire administered to respondents, only 498 copies were retrieved and
usedfor analysis. Mean scores and standard deviation were employed in answering
the research questions while z-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05
significant levels. The findings revealed among other things that gun-shot,
sexual violence, discipline, buying and gender discriminations are indicators
ofinsecure school environment. Also among others, problems of insecure school
environment are withdrawal ofstudents from schools, difficulty in expanding
learning activities andavoidance ofinsecure schools by teachers. There is no
significant difference between principals and teachers on indicators of
insecure school environment. Among others, the study recommended that the
government should see to it that schools are not located in areas that are
prone to insecurity, as this has the capacity to endanger lives andproperties
ofstudents, teachers andotherstakeholders
