Incidence Of Hospital Acquired Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Isolated From Nostrils Of Patients From Selected Hospitals In Umuahia:- Nwachukwu, Ihedi Kenneth K.
ABSTRACT
The prevalence
ofmethicillin resistant S, aureus (MRSA) was assessed among in-patients oftwo
hospitals. The swabs were cultured on mannitol salt agar (MSA) for isolation of
S. aureus. 58 isolates of S. aureus were identified. The antibiotic
susceptibility test was done using the agar disc diffusion test with
antibiotics susceptibility kit containing 8 antibiotics; Ceftazidime 30pg,
Cefurozime 30pg, Gentamicin lOpg, Ceftriazone 30pg, Erythromycin 5pg,
Cioxacillin 5pg, Ofloxacin 5pg and Augmentin 30pg. 44 (76%) of the isolates
were resistant to Cioxacillin (representing methicillin). The isolates had high
resistance to Ofloxacin 38 (65.51%), Ceftriazone 30 (51.72%), Cefurozime
(51.72%), Ceftazidime 29(50%) and Erythromycin (53.44%) at high levels. The
isolates were mostly sensitive to Gentamycin 48 (82.30%) and Augmentine 30
(51.72%). The prevalence ofhospital - acquired MRSA was 44 (76%). There is a
high level of methicillin resistance among patients and suggests need for
monitoring by health professionals to avoid future outbreak ofHA - MRSA.
