ABSTRACT
In vivo evaluation of aqueous extract of
Pleurotus ostreatus grown on HCI-soaked palm oil bunch on some serum minerals
was carried out using wistar albino rats in the laboratory. Twenty-four (24)
male rats were grouped into six (6) (n=4) according to weight range and fed
vital growers mash and water ad libitum. Group 1 served as the control group
and was administered with the control group of P. ostreatus while the different
test group (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 HCI) were administered P. ostreatus treated with
different concentration of HCI (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5%) respectively. This
experiment took 4 weeks (Iweek acclimatization, 3 weeks' administration), after
which the animals were sacrificed and the serum was analyzed for minerals
(Calcium, sodium and potassium). Results showed that there was a
non-significant increase (p.0.05) in serum potassium when test groups were
compared with that of the control. Serum sodium concentration also showed a
non-significant increase except 0.3HCI concentration which decreased but also
non-significantly (p>0.05) when test groups were compared with that of the
control. Serum calcium showed a non-significant increase (p>0.05) at 0.1,
0.2 and 0.5% HCI concentration but at 0.3 and 0.4% HCI concentration, it showed
a significant increase (p<0.05) when test groups were compared with that of
the control. This study therefore indicated that P. ostreatus is an established
good source of minerals with no toxicity on serum minerals and therefore
recommends that further research is needed as the nutritive value can be
affected by environmental factors.
