ABSTRACT
The main objective of this study
is to determine the effect of corporate social responsibility on financial
performance of banks in Nigeria. Access Bank Plc was studied over a period of
ten (10) years (2009 — 2018). This work employed the banks' donation on health,
donation on education and donation on environment for the independent variable
in determining the effect on financial performance variables, Profit after tax
(PAT), Return on Assets (ROA) and Return on equity (ROE) as dependent
variables. The ex-post facto research design was used for this study. The
secondary 4ata were obtained from the financial statements (Comprehensive
income statement and Statement of financial position) of the bank. Descriptive
statistics, Ordinary least square simple regression was employed and used for
the analysis. The results of the analysis showed that Donation on health has
negative significant relationship with profit after tax of the bank, negative
insignificant relationship with return on equity of the bank and positive insignificant
effect on return on assets of the bank Donation on education has positive significant
relationship with profit after tax of the bank, positive insignificant relationship
with return on equity of the bank and positive insignificant relationship with
return on assets of the bank Donation on environment has positive insignificant
relationship with profit after tax of the bank, positive insignificant
relationship with return on equity of the bank and negative insignificant
relationship with return on assets of the bank. Based on the above findings,
the researcher recommended that management of banks should be more
environmentally friendly by increasing its donation on the waste management.
Banks should increase their donations on health, education and the environment
such that it would influence return on equity. Additionally, banks should
identify social responsibility activities that would impact more on the society
in order to' attract continued patronage.
