ABSTRACT
The level of heavy metals (Cd, Hg, Ni, Zn, Cu,
and Pb) in soils and cassava plant from farm land around the dumpsite was
detennined using digestion and Atomic 'Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Soil
samples were collected at the depth of 0-15cm and 15-30cm from the dumpsite and
other samples were collected at the tlepth of 0-15cm and 15-30cm from an area
where there is no dumpsite do serve as -,:control . Plant samples ( cassava
tuber) were as well collected from the dumpsite and from an area far from the
dumpsite to serve as control. The mean concentration bf heavy metals in the
soil of the dumpsite was higher than that of the soil of the 'control but was
lower than that of the pennissible limits of European (EU, 2002). I The
concentration of heavy metals in the plant of the dumpsite was higher than that
[of the control and the concentration of (10.52mg/kg) Pb and Ni (9.3mg/kg) in
the [plant of the dumpsite was higher than the pennissible limit ofWHO/FAO
(2007), land this calls for the remediation of such an area since the inhabitants
depend on this area for farming.
