ABSTRACT
This study
investigated the heavy metal content in POME, POME contaminated soil, drinking
water and selected vegetables (Scent leaf), Ta/mum fruticoscum (Water leaf),
Gongronema latifolium (Utazi), Vernon/a amygda/ina (Bitter leaf), Telfairia
occidentalis (Pumpkin leaf) and (Green leaf) Amarantus t'ivcfridis grown in
palm oil irrigated farm land in in Obeakpu palm oil mill site in Umuaka, Njaba
in Imo State, Nigeria. Except drinking water, every other sample was given
preliminary treatment and digested prior to heavy metal analysis. The atomic
adsorption spectrophotometer was calibrated using low to high concentration of
the respective standard salts of the heavy metal according to the guideline of
the manufacture. The results of this work showed that vegetables had the
following concentration; 1.53±0.03, 0.58±0.00, 1.48±0.04, 1.31±0.01, 0.89±0.01,
and 1.77±0.02 for Zn. Iron showed the level of 5.08±0.03, 2.75±0.02, 5.21±0.01,
3.90±0.02, 6.76±0.03 and 15.80±0.02. Then manganese was 2.13±0.01, 0.44±0.00,
0.61±0.01 and 0.76±0.00. Nickel indicates 0.29±0.00, 0.19±0.00, 0.07±0.00,
0.32±0.01, 0.24±0.00 and the rest were not detected. Therefore the soil had the
following concentration; 7.60±0.01 for zinc, 13.00±0.10 for iron, 0.26±0.00 for
manganese, 0.10±0.00 for copper, 0.09±0.00 for cobalt, and the rest were not
detected. Furthermore, water sample did not detect any heavy metals. Palm oil
mill effluent had the following concentration; 0.03±0.00 for cadmium, 0.91±0.02
for zinc, 1.73±0.01 for iron, 1.30±0.03 for lead, and others were not detected.
The result when compared with the USEPA recommended safe limits; statistically
they are still within the range except lead, nickel and copper. The result of
this study will bring awareness to consumers and the government agencies on
these samples about what people consumed and its health implication, as well as
assist them and the farmers in taking precautions.
