                                      ABSTRACT

A factorial experiment of 2 x 3 in a Completely Randomised Design (CRD) involving two metabolisable energy and three protein levels were used to investigate the influence of diatary protein and energy levels on hematological and biochemical indices of the Nigeria local chicken at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Teaching and Research farm. there were three genotypes and two birds per genotype for each diet. The blood samples were collected forth nightly for five times and subjected to laboratory analysis to identify their I-lb. PCV, WBC. RBC, serum Ca. Serum TP and serum c1101. The data generated were analysed using some statistical model. The result indicated significant difference (P<0.05) on Ca both for normal and naked neck with diet 6 showing the highest mean va Inc (3I.73 mg/ 100ml ) and d jet 3 showing the least value (18. 23mg/100m1) for normal chicken. Diets 5 had the highest mean (7.76mg/100mI) and diet 6, the least mean value (20.77mg/100ml) for naked neck. The result also indicated significantly difference (P<O.050 on serum cholesterol for naked neck with diets 5 having the highest mean (3.85mg/100ml) and diet 4 showing the least value (111mg/I 00mI). Also on WBC, there were significant difference (P<0.05) for the Naked Neck with diet 4 showing the highest mean (11.38 x 105inni3) and diet 6 having 5 3 the least mean value (4.34 x 10mm ). in conclusion, although not all the diets showed significant differences (P>0.05) for all the parameters on the genotype, diet 4 perform better than the other diets at significant level (P<0.05) because, its RBC, 1-lb and PCV which are needed for transportation gases and blood formation with its serum Ca and IP

which are essential for egg formation were relatively high among the

genotypes.
