ABSTRACT

Two varieties of phaseolus vulgaris (black and brown) were evaluated for their growth performance, proximate composition and antinutrients presence in different percentage of dump site soil (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%). Hundred percent (100%) dump site soil was found to give a greater height in black bean (231.00cm) and 7 5% had 226.333cm at the 71 st day after planting in brown bean. Hundred percent (100%) and 75% was found to give high number of pods (20) in black bean while 75% had the highest number of pods in brown beans (21). The proximate composition and antinutritional content in black bean with respect to the soil percentage are: carbohydrate content (mg/g) at 0%=13.5mg/g, at 100% = 17.03 mg/g. Protein content at 0%= 28.82 mg/g, at 100%= 26.83 mg/g, at 75%= 27.53 mg/g, at 50%= 27.53 mg/g and at 25%= 26.72 mg/g. For brown bean, carbohydrate content at 100%= 13.29 mg/g, at 75%= 14.04 mg/g, and at 50%= 18.17 mg/g. Protein content at 0%= 26.83 mg/g, at 100% = 28.81 mg/g, at 75% = 26.95 mg/g and at 50%= 18.17 mg/g. Fat content at 100% = 17.01 mg/g, at 75% = 13.05 mg/g, at 50% = 26.97 mg/g. The antinutritional composition for black bean- tannin content at 0% = 0.39mg/g, at 100% = 0.3mg/g, at 75% = 0.43mg/g and at 50% = 0.35mg/g. Trypsin inhibitor content at 0% = 1.90 mg/g, at 100%== 1.90 mg/g. Phytate content at 0% = 0.34 mg/g, at 100% = 0.41 mg/g, at 75%= 0.38 mg/g. Oxalate content at 100% = 0.23 mg/g, at 0% = 0.21 mg/g. HCN content at 0% = 26.03 mg/g and at 75%= 23.03 mg/g. For brown bean, trypsin inhibitor content at 0% = 2.3lmg/g, at 75% = l.81mg/g. Tannin content at 0% = 0.42 mg/g and at 75% = 0.38 mg/g. Phytate content at 0% = 0.38 mg/g, at 75% = 0.34 mg/g, and at 50% = 0.43 mg/g. Oxalate content at 0%= 0.16 mg/g, at 75% = 0.33 mg/g. HCN content at 0% = 25.0 mg/g, at 75% = 24.02 mg/g, and finally at 50% = 24.01 mg/g. Some plants died off before experiments were carried out.
