Abstract
The hospitality industry
significantly impacts the environment due to its high consumption of resources
such as energy, water, and materials. In Port Harcourt, the hotel industry
faces critical environmental challenges, primarily stemming from a lack of
awareness and understanding of green technologies among hotel managers and
owners. Many are not fully informed about the economic and environmental
benefits of adopting sustainable practices, resulting in increased energy
consumption, water scarcity, and waste management issues. This study
investigates the adoption and implementation of green technology practices to
promote environmental responsibility in hotels in Port Harcourt. It aims to
identify effective strategies for mitigating environmental degradation,
enhancing sustainability, and fostering eco-friendly operations. The objectives
include examining energy-efficiency procedures, evaluating water conservation
practices, assessing waste reduction strategies, and determining sustainable
sourcing techniques utilized by hotels in the study area. A convenience
sampling technique was employed to select the study sample, and data were
collected using questionnaires and interviews. Descriptive statistics,
including frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, were used
to analyze respondents' data and research questions, while the Chi-square test
was employed to test the hypotheses. The findings reveal that although many
hotels have adopted basic green technologies, such as LED lighting, low-flow
water fixtures, and waste segregation systems, the implementation of advanced
practices, such as renewable energy systems, water recycling, and comprehensive
sustainable sourcing policies, remains limited due to financial and technical
constraints. Guest and staff participation in green initiatives emerged as a
critical factor in enhancing the effectiveness of these practices. The study
highlights the benefits of green technologies, including cost savings, improved
brand reputation, and reduced environmental footprints. It recommends
prioritizing investments in energy-efficient technologies, such as LED lighting
and smart HVAC systems, training staff on the use and maintenance of green
technologies, and implementing effective waste segregation, recycling, and
composting programs to reduce environmental impacts and promote sustainability
within the hospitality industry.
