Germination And Early Seedling Growth Rates Of Entandrophragma Cylinfricum, Dennerria Tripetala And Terminalia Superba In Umudike, Abia State, Nigeria
ABSTRACT
Germination of Term Lialia superba,
Eniancfrophrcigma cylincfricum and Dennetia tripetala were studied. The
objectives of this study are to determine the germination percentage and to
evaluate the germination rate. Data were collected on the seed, germination
height growth and weekly number of leaves. Descriptive statistic means values;
percentage and tables were used to present the data. The seeds were planted in
the poly bags. Watering was done every morning and evening. The number of seeds
that germinated was recorded every week likewise the heights and number of
leaves. The germination rate and early seedling growth rate of these plants
were determined. On the sixth week, Entancfrophragina Cylindricurn had the
lowest mean of' number of leaves (13.8), Terminalia superba had mean of 43.1
while Dcniieitia tripelala had the highest mean of 15.6. The mean total heights
in week six being the last week, Terminalia superba species had the highest
mean of 33.1, Dennettia tripelala had total mean of 22.8 while Entancfrophragma
Gylindricum had the lowest mean of 13.8. Termlnalia superba had the highest
percentage of 75% having a fast germination rate while Entandrophragma
Gylindricum and Deuiellia tripe/ala showed the lowest germination rate with
percentage of 5Q% and 55% with up to 21 days of germination.
