Gender Analysis of Behavioural Response to Mitigation and Adaptation Measures of Climate Change among rice farmers in Southeast, Nigeria
ABSTRACT
Rice
(Oryza Sativa) is important in Nigeria for several reasons. According
to Longtau, (2013), rice is a
major contributor to domestic and sub-regional trade, and also a staple for
most of the people in Nigeria. With the
Federal Government reduction in importation of rice and subsequent support of
rice production through different farmers support programmes, cultivation of
rice has subsequently increased in Nigeria. Since it is a staple crop,
farmers seem to be willing to grow it all the time no matter the constraints
they are facing. Nigeria’s potential for rice production is so huge that some
rice growing systems such as the upland hill have scaled-up production because
smallholder farmers searching for more land to cultivate rice. In the light of
a viable rice culture, (even amongst communities which have only marginal land
for rice cultivation due to socioeconomic factors) and availability of
appropriate varieties, farmers now contend with adverse climactic variables for
optimum production.
