ABSTRACT

 

The research project is on the topic: "Financing of small scale businesses in Nigeria". A study of selected enterprises in Umuahia. Two sources of data were used in the course of the study. The primary data were obtained through the administration of structured questionnaires and oral interviews the secondary data were obtained through the review of related literature. In the analyses of the data collected, percentages were used to analyze the questionnaires. These were supported by statistical frequency tables with columns and rows of yes/no responses Chi-Square (X2) and decision rule was employed in the testing of hypothesis. The major findings of the study include the following. Bank effort through the small and medium Enterprises investment

scheme (SMIES) to increase the finding of small scale enterprises are not yielding enough results  Government has not been giving adequate financial assistance to small scale enterprises Lack of finance is not the major reason for the mortality rate of small scale business in Nigeria. Finally, the research proffers some remedial steps to the problems identified as follows  ugh interest rate or bank loans should be reduced to enable small businesses owners borrow from banks  The Small and Medium Scale Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEI)AN) should serve as a bridge between SMES and SMILIS to ensure free flow of finds High demand of collateral security, restriction on banks loans placed by some government to enable small business owners to source for fund through debt financing The small scale owners should training, etc to help their staff since one of the major causes of high mortality rate is lack of managerial.
