ABSTRACT

The study investigated factors affecting farmers adoption of Faro 12 and Faro 26 improved rice varieties, in Ohafia Agricultural zone of Abia State. Data were collected randomly from 130 farm families within five blocks of the Lowland rice producing area. Analytical technique employed were descriptive statistics (frequencies and percentages). Adoption model (Al ETA) and multiple regression analysis were employed to test the level and rate of adoption respectively. Reasons for adoption and non-adoption of the technology were assessed. Level of awareness, channels of information and some socio-economic factors were also analysed. The study observed significant relationships between adoption and other soclo-economic and socio cultural factors like Income, Location of farm, farm size, Labour, Sex, Age Land, level of Education, farming experiences. Additionally the adoption level of the technology package was high. Regression analysis revealed that there is positive and significant relationship between age, experience and income and adoption of the improved practice. Farmers were aware of the existence of the varieties through radio, T.V, friends, neighbours, Extension agents and research institutes. Again farmers adopted the improved rice production because of the desirable qualities associated with it like high yield, resistance to pest and disease, early maturing etc. ADPs' Research Institutes should be adequately funded by Government. Information sources should be adequately utilized to enhance efficient and effective extension delivery strategies in the Agricultural zone.
