ABSTRACT

arc managing wastes effectively and economically. This study evaluates the type
of waste and waste management in Umuahia Capital Territory of Abia state
Nigeria. Methods of study were the use of questionnaire to obtain information
and data, personal communication with residents of Umuahia and staff of the
Abia State Environmental Protection Agency and visits to various dump sites in
the study area. Results show that some sources of solid waste in the city arc
schools, hospitals, market places, homes, etc. Types of waste identified
include metals, food products and garbage's, textile and paper material,
plastic, nylon, furniture and woods, etc. The total number of dump sites are
forty (40) in number and the wastes were disposed to the final dump sites with
the aid of compactor vehicles which disposed the wastes generated in areas like
Umuahia Gate which has the largest amount of wastes and Eco power NDDC. Tippers
were used to dispose wastes generated in areas that generate small quantities
of waste.
