ABSTRACT

 The purpose of this study was to evaluate the implementation of Social Studies curriculum in Junior Secondary Schools in Cross River State. To achieve the purpose of this study, four research questions were posed and four (4) hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. To aid the study, literature was reviewed based on conceptual framework, theoretical framework and empirical related study was also reviewed. A survey design was adopted. A sample of one thousand and fifteen (1015) respondents was selected for the study through simple random sampling technique. The questionnaire was the main instrument used for data collection. Percentage and mean was adopted to analyzed research questions while z-test statistic was adopted to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The result revealed that Social Studies Curriculum is not implemented fully in terms of content coverage; there is a gross inadequacy of instructional facilities in schools to facilitate the implementation of Social Studies curriculum; time is not adequate to allow for effective teaching and learning of Social Studies; and the teaching personnel required to foster the implementation of Social Studies are inadequate. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that curriculum planners should re-adjust time allotted for the teaching and learning of Social Studies to allow for content coverage while institutions acquire relevant instructional facilities to aid effective teaching and learning as qualified personnel's are also engage to teach Social Studies.
