ABSTRACT
This study evaluated the social
cognitive factors associated with body composition of students (adolescents and
youths) in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia stale A
total of 504 students were used for the study A validated questionnaire was
used to obtain information on the beliefs attitudes and knowledge on the
consequences of being underweight and overweight respectively Aniluopometric
measurements of the students were taken and their body mass index body frame
and waist/hip ratio calculated and compared with reference. standards Female
students were found to be more overweight (2lTh'), obese (LS%) and at higher
risk of health problems using waist circumference (99°.) and waist-hip ratio
(8S6!o) grades than their male counterparts Large body frame may have
contributed to the body mass index of 42 of students that were obese..
Perception and appreciation of body image was significantly associated with all
the index of body composition used (body mass index, waist circumference and
waist-hip ratio) Most (813%, 663% and 7L4%) of under-weight overweight and
obese students respectively perceived themselves as being nominal Also. 313%.,
42.2 and 143% of students who were under-weight overweight and obese liked
their status and want to maintain it. Most (1l9) of the students that could not
access their nutritional status were at risk of health problems The study
revealed a poor nutritional knowledge and w on perception of body composition
as most of the suits perceived themselves to be under weight, normal, and
overweight 4ien actually they are not
