ABSTRACT
Poultry dropping upgraded with
maggot at different periods were evaluated for microbial quality. Poultry
droppings were divided into five portions; each portion was exposed to house
fly so that they can breed maggot under the following periods, 0 hour, 24
hours, 48 hours, 72 hours and96 hours. The 0 hour was not exposed to house fly;
it was used as a control. Each portion of the sample was evaluated
microbiologically at 0 hour, 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours and 96 hours. Ten
grams from each sample were serially diluted. Dilution iO4was plated through a
pour plate method. Fungi and Bacteria colonies were counted. All isolated
organism were also identified. The result showed that 72 áolony forming units
(CFU) were counted at 0 hour, 142 at 24 hours, 168 at 48 hours, 176 at 72 hours
and 146 at 96 hours for bacteria. For fungi, 30 CFU were counted at 0 hour, 42
at 24 hours, 66 at 48 hours, 44 at 72 and 25 at 96 hours. The bacterial
isolated included Streptococcus, Pseudomonas, E. colt Staphylococcus, Bacillus,
Proteus and Clostridium. Also the fungi isolated from the samples included
Aspergellus nigre, Aspergellus flavus, fusanum, penicillium, Geotrichiumand
Rhizo pus. Production of good quality maggot upgraded poultry droppings was
achieved at 48 hours; at this stage, it was observed that the poultry droppings
upgraded with maggot was at its best quality because at this stage, there was
rapid multiplication of microbes (Bacteria and Fungi). At 72 hours, the
microbes' production started reducing, while the production of microbes dropped
at 96 hours. Monitoring the growth of the microbes from 0 hour to 48 hours, it
was observed that they were increasing rapidly, while at 72 hours, the increase
started reducing, while at 96 hours, it dropped. At 48 hours, most of the
harmful organisms were eliminated because of their vulnerable nature to harsh
environment (outside the enteric environment) examples include E coli and
Clostridium. Therefore, harvesting the maggots upgraded poultry droppings at 48
hours after exposure to house fly is recommended as a safe period for use as
feed ingredient.
