ABSTRACT
Environmental management has gained
importance around the world with many strategies, in recent year, there have
been an increasingly intensive interest in assessing, measuring and documenting
the environmental performance and increasing need for tools that would allow
for proper and objective quantification or measurement of the performance of an
organization with respect to their Environmental Condition Indicator (ECI),
Management Performance Indicators (MPI), and Operational Performance Indicators
(OPI) as well as ensuring compliance with regulatory requirement etc. However,
the ISO standard is quite new and there is limited experiences of applying the
standard in a cement industry. This study was design to evaluate environmental performance of lafarge
cement industry, nfamosing akamkpa local government area of cross river state.
And was Limited to Key Performance Indicators (Emission into air, Discharge
into Water, Noise level, Waste Management, and Use of energy as well as Management performance, and Operational
performance. Parameters checked on emission were Dust, Sulphur (SO2),
VOC, CO, Oxygen (O2,), Nitrogen Oxide (NO), and Hydrogen sulphate (H2S)
at kiln, clinker and milling point and were not significant at (P>0.05) while CO and VOC were observed only in the
milling point at 125±0.00 and 5.8±0.00. However SO2 and CO exceeded the limit by NESREA
set for the pollutants. Significant amount of physicochemical were recorded in
water, waste as well a heavy metal. All were within the recommended limit of
NESREA and WHO. On the evaluation on management performance 40 questionnaires
were distributed and 33 were returned. 6 respondent were in maintenance
department, 19 operational and while 8 were in co-operate affair departed. 23
male responded as well as 10 female. 10 were within the age of 13-24, 13 in 25-
34yers, 14 between 35-49 years while 1 was above 50 years. 13 respondent have
1-5years working experience, 15 within 6-10 years of experience, while 2 have
16-20 working experience. 10 attended primary school level, 17 secondary and 6
tertiary. Environmental policy recorded
mean score of 5.00, planning 4.60,
implementation and operation 4.69, waste management plan 4.24 checking and corrective
action 4.24 and administrative review 4.09, SOP 5.00, style of SOP 5.00, benefit
4.48 and review 5.00 therefor need
continues improvement specifically in are of
panning, implementation, action, administration, and benefit to ascertain the maximum score of 5.00.
