ABSTRACT

This Study was conducted to evaluate the quality assessment of selected public swimming pools in Umuahia for water quality sustainability for indoor recreation. This study was carried out in the capital city of Abia State, Umuahia. The study sampled five hotels in Umuahia with swimming pool in use. The hotels sampled are Damgrete, Confidence, Villa Roy, Wiss Castle and BenacHotles respectively. The study evaluated the physical chemical, and the microbial properties of the swimming pools. Thereafter data were analyzed using One -way analysis of variance to determine homogeneity in mean variance of the parameters across the sampling locations, and post- hoc mean separation done with the Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at P<0.05. From the results, the Average temperature for the pools in Umuahia was 24.75 °C. Then the average turbidity of the swimming pools was 2.98 NUT. The pH of the swimming pools was all within the permissible limit of world health organization (WHO) and average at 7.04. The average amount of Electrical conductivity, NOa', BOD, and total residue chlorine were 3.96us/cm, 3.96mg/l, 1.07mg/l and 2.64mg/l respectively. Benac hotel had the highest availability of microorganism among the sampled pools: the organisms isolated and identified are S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, Bacillus sp, Citrobactersp, Klebsiellasp and Enterobacter sp. 57. 12 for the lowest 3 bacteries, 19.04 for 4, and 23.80, for 5. In conclusion swimming pool problems are as a result of inadequate pool water maintenance. Regular monitoring and testing of the pool water chemistry will ensure a low-cost maintenance sparkling and clean swimming pool all the year round.
