ABSTRACT
The
antimicrobial activity of five commonly used toothpaste were investigated
against staphylococcu aureus, candida
albicans, Lactobacillus acidophilus isolate from the oral cavity of volunteers
from ikwuano L.G.A in Abia State. At concentration of 1:1 dilution and exposure
time of 10minutes the red close up exhibited a drastic reduction in the number
of viable candida albicans while
exposure for resulted in total inhibition of 1:1 at 0 minute the number of
viable organism staphylococcus aureus was reduced in all toothpaste at
5 to 20 minutes and 1:2 at 20minutes total inhibition of the growth of the
organism by Red Close up .While Macleans, Dabur Harbal show Inhibition at 20
minutes at concentration of 1:1 dilution.
Holdent at 1:1 and 1;2 resulted total Inhibition at exposure time 10 to
20 minutes at 1:1 dilution and exposure time of 10 minutes at 1:2 At
concentration of 1:1 dilution Holdent toothpaste totally Inhibit the organism
at 0 to 20 minutes to time and Red Close also Inhibited at 10-20 minutes at 1:1
and 1:2 dilutions Whereas Dabur, macleans
and pepsodent reduced the growth of the organism Lactobacillus acdiophillus
.Pepsodent from my investigation was the list in the antimicrobial activity
from all the toothpaste used in this investigation. In conclusion all the
toothpaste show antimicrobial activity on the isolated organisms at
concenterated dilutions with exposure time I therefore recommend that people
should brush for a longer period of time
