ABSTRACT

Herbal production are often used for the treatment of diseases in traditional medicine, ethanol leaf extract of Musa paradisiaca was evaluated for its anti inflammatory effect on Aspirin induced albino rats, and diuretic effects on Frusemide induced albino rats. For the anti- inflammatory screening , two rats were assigned to each group were administered Musa paradisiaca extract intraperitoneally. 2m1 of 500, 250,125, 31 and 15mg/mI of the extract, Aspirin (positive control) and normal saline (for negative control) respectively. The rats was left for 30mins after which 1 ml of fresh egg albumin was injected into the hind paw of each of the rats and was allowed for another 30mins before measuring the hind paw with vienier caliper at 30mins interval. The result obtained were subjected to one way ANOVA at P<0.05 level of significance. When compared with the negative control, the ulcer level decreases significantly ( P<0.05) in rats that received 500,250, 125, 62, 31 and 15mg/mi of extract. The anti inflammatory effect of the extract was significant which shows that Musa paradisiaca has anti inflammatory effect on ulcer treatment for the diuretic screening, the rats were placed in metabolic cages (one per cage) specially designed to separate urine and feces. Immediately after administration. The urine was collected for 24hours, the parameters taken were total urine volume, the concentration of Na, K' Cl' and HCO3 . Na has the highest concentration in the urine while K has the lowest electrolyte concentration on the urine of the rats. From this study it shows that Musa paradisiaca has diuretic and anti-inflammatory activities in experimental animal model.
