ABSTRACT
The leaf and stem bark of
Pentaclethra macrophylla and the leaves of Newbouldia laevis were analyzed for
their phytochemical and anti-microbial properties. The (iC-MS analysis of the
stem bark of Pentaclethra macrophylla yielded 10 compounds: 1,2,3- benzenetriol
(11.53 %), 1, 4 — methoxy -3- (4- methyl phenoxy ) phenyl ethanone (2.31 %) , 1,2-benzenecarboxylic
acid (2.31.%) , 3-eicosene (2.31 %), hexadecanoic methyl ester, (4.62 %),
n-hexadecanoic acid (20.77. %), 6-octadecenoic acid methyl ester (5.38 o,/),
6-octadecanoic acid, (25.77 %), octadecanoic acid (13.25 %) and naphto [-1, 2,
6-] furan -2-one (10.38 %).The following compounds were identified from the
leaf of Newboudia laveis; 2- phenoxy ethyl beta -2- phenoxy ethyl-3-phenyl
propanoate (1.41%), benzene-(1-methyl nonadecyl) (1.41 %), 6-phenyl undecane
(1.06%), Eicosyne (2.47 %), hexadecanoic acid methyl ester(13.73 %),
nhexadecanoic acid (9.16%), z-octadecanoie acid (22.81 %) ,9-octadecanoic acid
(22.81 %) phytol (23.51 %) Oleic acid (10.56 %) , octadecanoic acid. (5.97 %)
,squalene (7.75 %) Analysis of the leaf of Pentaclethra macrophylla gave 8
compounds ; z, z -2, 15 —octadecedien - 1-ol acetate (6.90 %) ,hexadecanoic
acid (3.14 %), n-hexadecanoic acid (10.69%), 6- octadecenoic acid (13.84 %)
,octadecanoic acid (8.18 %), (.2H) phenanthrenone (42.14 %) ,Pregnan-2-one
(6.29 %) and -4-methylene-1-methyl-2- (z— methyl 1-propene -1- yl) cyclo hexane
(9.43 %). The extracts showed marked inhibition of the growth of seven selected
pathogens; Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coil,
Salmonella lyphi, Candida albicans, Penicillium and Aspergillus niger. 13 —
Benzyl ethyl methyl abietate was isolated from the stem bark of Pentaclethra
macrophylla, the structur was elucidated using spectrum obtained from 'H and
13C NMR, JR and Mass Spectrometer. The compound 4, 15 — chloestene
-3-yl-benzoate was also isolated from the leaf of_Pentaclethra macrophylla
using similar analytical tools.
