ABSTRACT

 Using acceptable Biochemical methods, this study investigated the levels of some serum enzymes, total bilirubin and total cholesterol levels in non hypertensive and hypertensive pregnant patients, attending antenatal clinic in federal medical cents e (FMC), Umuahia. The Patients whose age were between 22 and 39, weighed between 45 and 95kg and were in their second and third 1nnieseis of pregnancy. They were divided into 2 groups in the course of this study, group i and group ii. Gp I was made up of JO non hypertensive pregnant females while U 11 was made of 8 hypertensive pregnant females. The results of this study showed that ALT level in lion-hypertensive pregnant females was 8.85 6.85 as compared to hypertensive pregnant females which was 10.94 ± 7.47. The mean aspartate amino transferae (AST) activity in non-hypertensive pregnant females was I 7.20 ± I 0.00 as compared to hypertensive pregnant females which was 22.81 ± 8. 16. The mean alkaline phosphatase activity in non-hypertensive pregnant females was I 10.30+16.01 and 148.62 ± 17.73 for hypertensive pregnant females. the mean total cholesterol level for group i and group ii patients we 10.08 ± 6.50 and 17.85 9.06 respectively. 25.97 ± 13.98 and 2. 83 -L I 2.69 was the of total bilirubin level in non hypertensive and hypertensive patients respective. The mean body weight of non hypertensive pa1Cn1s was 60.80 + 9.5 I while that of hypertensive pregnant patients was 70.50 ± 14.62. 1-lypertension is extremely dangerous when combined with pregnancy and is a leading cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. The effects of the results obtained are discussed in this work.
