ABSTRACT

Gas flaring according to Kaladumo, C. 0. K. (1996) can be defined as the disposal of natural gas to the atmosphere by burning the oil fields and refineries when no other use could be made from it at that particular time. There are two types of gas flaring via: associated gas and non associated. But for the purpose of this study, I will focus mainly on associated gas, which is the gas produced during crude oil production. Environment, according to Environ (1881) can be defined as everything that is around us. It includes living things - people, animals, insects as well as non living things like rocks, sand, water and so on. Though the project work cuts across environmental impact assessment of gas flaring, my analysis was based on impact of gas flaring on water in which the following Physico-chemical properties of water were determined. These properties are water temperature, colour, total suspended solids, dissolved solid, conductivity, free carbon vi oxide, total alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, salinity, ammonium nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, phosphate, phosphorus and total hardness. From the water analysis there is that confirmation of degradation of the environment. This has not only affected human health, but the fishing industry, water quality, air environment and domestic activities. Therefore, way out of this problem in environmental consideration and consciousness which oil companies must necessarily have while embarking on oil exploitation. If they follow vigorously the provisions of the law and standards set by regulatory agencies and other social suggestions put forward in the thesis.
