ABSTRACT

Energy intake (El), energy expenditure (EE) anthropometric parameter and the effect of 100 elderly subjects in 5 communities of Etche in Rivers State were determined. The elders ranged from 60-110 years and grouped into two groups of 60-80 years and 81-110 years of both male and female. For intake was assessed with food diaries and diet recall, and mean value showed variation between the ages but all met with their energy intake standard requirement. Anthropometric assessment showed that 15°/b of the elders did not met their weight for height standard. Mean body weight values were 63.01±16.5kg and 59.9 ±8.7kg for 60-80 years and 81-110 years groups respectively for male. Correspond of values for female elders were 60.7 ±118kg and 67.511.9kg for ages 60-80 pattern significantly affected their energy expenditure. However, 14% of the subjects activity pattern did not effect their energy expenditure. Mean energy expenditure among the males were 2571.4 ±154.5kca1/day and 2574.9166.10kcal/day for ages 60-80 years and 81-110 years respectively. Among the females the energy expenditure values were 2662.1±88.9kca1/day and 2108.5±262.7kcaVday for age 60-80 years and 81-110 years respectve1y Elder in age group 60-80 years had normal BMI value (22.73) while the older elders had BMI below normal (18.76). Indicating possible under nutrition among the males. However, among the females BMI values were within the normal range for good health.
