Effects Of Pay Disparity On The Performance Of Commercial Bank Employees In Nigeria: A Study Of Union And Diamond Banks Plc
ABSTRACT
The performance of Banks is of importance to investors
because it determines both the returns on investment and it is a measure of
economic stability and secured investment environment. The study examined pay
disparity on the performance of commercial bank employees in Nigeria: using
first and second generation banks. The specific objectives of the study were to
identify factors that influence pay disparity in the selected Banks. To find
out the consequences of pay disparity on the performance of employees in Union
and Diamond Banks. To find out the extent of pay disparity among employees of
Union and Diamond Banks. To find out the relationship between pay disparity and
the performance of employees in the selected banks. The survey research was
used. The primary and secondary sources were the main methods for data collection.
The sample size used in the study was 98 bank staff randomly selected from the
two banks. Three hypotheses were tested. Data was analyzed and descriptively
presented using frequency and percentage distribution tables. The test of
hypotheses used chi square statistics. Variables tested-- were pay, pay
satisfaction, job satisfaction, employee performance and reaction to pay
disparity. The result showed disparity in pay and a very high level of employee
dissatisfaction for pay, which reflected on the performance of the banks. This
study recommends the narrowing of pay gaps within commercial banks as a panacea
for improved performance.
