ABSTRACT
Each year, many companies report healthy profits but file for bankruptcy nevertheless. This research work centered on the assessment of the effects
of cash flow statements on corporate financial performance using selected companies in the petroleum marketing and food beverages listed in the Nigerian stock exchange. In the course of this research, three hypothesis were formulated and for testing the hypothesis, data were sourced through secondary data from· four companies, two each from petroleum marketing and food/beverage sector of NSE, using their annual report (financial statements). The data were analysed using tables and charts and the hypotheses were tested using regression and ANOVA. It was found out that effective and efficient cash flow analysis· is highly needed and · significantly useful to determine the solvency or otherwise of a business and a basis for forecasting future prospects of a firm. Also that both in short and long run, a business must generate positive cash flows from operations if the business is to survive. Thus, a business with negative cash flow from operations will not be able to raise cash from other source-. _ Therefore, it was recommended among other suggestions that a cash flow statement be used in conjunction with accrual reporting information so as · to be able to' obtain qualitative information on profitability, financial strength, financial flexibility and financial risk of enterprise.
