Effect Of Pruning Frequency On Production And Development Of Tillers Of Vetiver Grass (Vetiveria Zizanioides L Nash)
ABSTRACT
The effect of pruning frequency on the production and development of triflers by Vetiver grass (Vetiveria zizanioides L. Nash) was studied at the nursery of Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria Umuahia Abia State, Nigeria. The experimental design was a randomized complete block. Four pruning intervals including; pruning at 3Odays, at 60 days, at 90 days, with no pruning as the control, were applied. The number of tillers produced following each pruning interval was assessed. The root and total biomass of the crop was equally determined. During each assessment, heights and diameters of the clumps, as well as lengths of the longest roots were also measured. Data were subjected to Analysis of Variance (ANO'VA) and means separated using the least significant difference (L. S. D) test technique The result showed that pruning frequency affected the number of tillers, the height, clump diameter. biomass. and Length of the longest root per clump. Pruning at 30days intervals produced significantly the highest cumulative number of tillers 35.8, followed by pruning at 60 days. 30.7. Thinning at shorter intervals produced more tillers, which could be used in farmland enrichment and in craft production. Pruning at longer intervals of 90 days and above would however be advocated for erosion control and land stabilization where bulky clumps of vetiver would be most advantageous as ground cover.
