ABSTRACT
In this study, the ameliorative potential of
Loranthus micranthus was investigated in cadmium induced toxicity on kidney
function parameters in Wistar rats. Animals of 140-2 lOg weight were grouped
into four groups of four animals per group. In group 1 (control), animals had
access to feed and water, group 2, received 50mg/kg body weight (B.W) of
Cadmium was, in group 3 (extract) animals 1 50mg/kg BW of the leaves extracts
of Loranthus micranthus, while the last group concomitantly received 50mg/kg
B.W of Cadmium and 150mg/kg BW of Loranthus inicranihu.s' leaves extracts. At
the end of the study, values for the various electrolytes showed that Loranthus
micranthus had ameliorative properties on the kidney electrolytes by markedly
(p>O.OS) reducing the serum sodium ion concentration in the group 4 (extract
and Cadmium) compared to the intoxicated group (group 2) and the control. The
same trend was observe in Mg, where the control had value 7.75±1.45, 6.60±0.4 1
for the Cadmium (group 2) and (4.97±0.50) for the treated group (4). Calcium
followed the same trend which showed a relatively balanced serum Ca
(13.42±1.37) compared to 16.65±1.59 of the intoxicated group. These results
give credence to the use of Loranthus micranthus in treatment of various
different in traditional medicine.
