ABSTRACT
The study investigated the acute toxicity, phytochernicals content and the effect of methanol extract of citrullus lanatus on PSA and hormone profile level in di hydrotestosterone estradio 1-valarate induced benign prostatic hyperp lasia (BPH) in male wistar rats. The result of the phytochemical analysis showed the presence of alkaloid, saponins, flavonoid, tannins, terpenes and reducing sugar. The LD50was above 5000mg/kbwt. The result of the relative organ weight showed no significant (P>0.05) difference in relative kidney, lung and heart. The relative prostate weight of the disease control increase (P<0.05) significantly relative to the normal control while relative testes weight decrease (P< 0.05) significantly in disease control relative to other treatment groups. The result of the male hormone profile showed significant (P<0.05) increase in estradiol and testosterone in disease control relative to finasteride and methanol crude extract treated group. There was significant (P<0.05) decrease in PSA level in extract treated groups and finasteride (drug control) group when compared with the disease control. The result showed marked decrease in luteinizing hormone in disease control group when compared with other experimental groups. The result showed that the extract effectively reduced the size of the enlarged prostate exogenously induced. And also decrease the levels of PSA. It attenuated hyperplasia and showed to be good prophylaxis against BPH and this might be possible because of its phytochemical components.
