Effect Of Methanol Extract Of Mucuna Prurienspruriens Leaves On The Redox Status Of Alloxan- Induced Diabetic Rats

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the protective action of methanol extract of Mucuna prurienspuriens leaves extract on alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Analysis of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, vitamin E, vitamin c, glutathione (GSH), fasting blood sugar (FBS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) was conducted. Twenty five (25) albino rats were distributed into five groups consisting of five rats each. Group 1 (Normal control) received no administration of alloxan but received normal feed and water, ad libitum diabetes. Group 2(Negative control) was given water and feed ad libiturn induced without treatment. Rats in Group 3 were (given water feed ad libtium diabetes) induced and treated with glibenclamide. Group 4(given water ad libitum and treated with 50mg/kg body weight of mucuna prurienspuriens leaves extract. Group 5 were given feed and water, treated using 100mg/kg body weight of mucuna prurienspuriens leaves extract. Result findings of superoxide dismutase indicates that the 50mg of the extract showed a significant effect when compared with the negative control and there was no significant decrease observed in group when compared with negative and positive control. The 50mg and 100mg of extract showed a significant decrease in catalase level at (p<0.05) when compared with the negative, normal and standard controls. The extract at 50 and 100mg showed a significant increase in GSH at (p>< 0.05) when compared with the negative and also a significant increase was observed in standard and negative control when compared with the normal control at (p<0.05).A significant increase was observed in GPx level with the rat treated with standard,50 and 100mg/kg when compared with the rat treated with negative control while there was a significant decreased in the negative control when compared with normal control at(p><0.05),In vit c and E,no non-significant difference was observed (p>O.OS) in all groups but significantly increased (p
