ABSTRACT
The study was aimed at investigating the effects
of methanol extract of ass stasia gangetica leaves on selected biochemical
parameters of the kidney of a monosodium glutamate challenged wistar albino
rats. A total of 36 male wistar albino rats and 18 mice were used for this
study. The eighteen male Wistar albino mice were divided into two major groups
of nine (9) mice each. Each of the two groups were further divided into three
having three mice each. The experimental rats were divided into nine groups
with four rats in each group. The study was conducted following standard
analytical protocols. The parameters reviewed were serum electrolyte,
creatinine, urea, urid acid, serum bicarbonate ions, serum potassium ions,
serum chloride ions, and sodium ions in normal, control, positive control and
experimental rats respectively. The normal control rats received 2ml/kg body
weight of distilled water for 14 days, while group 2 rats received a suspension
of monosodium glutamate, 8g/kg body weight on the seventh and fourteenth day.
Group 3 received 8g/kg body weight of monosodium glutamate and were treated
with 200mg/kg bodyweight of Silymarine for 14 days. Group 4 received 200mg/kg
bodyweight of methanol extract ofAsyslasia gengalicu leaves for 14 days, received
500mg/kg bodyweight of methanol extract of Asystasiu yenf'cilicu for 14 days.
Group 6 received 200mg/kg bodyweight of methanol extract ofAsyslasici gengaHea
for 7 days. After 30 minutes on 7lh and 14,h day respectively monosodium
glutamate was administered. They continued to receive the extracts for the next
7 days. Group 7 received 500mg/kg bodyweight of the extract for 7 days. After
30 minutes on day 7lh and 14th respectively monosodium glutamate suspension was
administered. They continued receiving the extract for the next 7 days. Group 8
received a suspension ofmonosodium glutamate on day one and day two and 14
respectively. Treatment with 200mg/kg bodyweight of the extract commenced after
24 hours for 14 days. In the group 2 rats, a significant (1’0.05) increased in
the examined kidney functional indices was observed. This means that the
extract poses no danger to the kidney. Group 3 showed a significant (1’0.05)
decreased compared to group 2. In group 6 and 7, there was a significant
(1’0.05) compared to group 2. From the value, the extract that was first
received posed no danger to the kidney. After the monosodium glutamate was
administered, the increased noticed was however not as bad as that of group 2.
The extract ameliorate the later adverse effect of the monosodium glutamate
that was given. In group 8 and 9. there was a significant (1’0.05) decrease,
the extract seemed to restore the kidnej to the normal especially when
administered in doses. From the above, it is imperative to establish that
monosodium may cause an adverse effect on the renal function which might be due
to oxidation stress. The effect ofthe extract restoring in renal function could
be attributed to the extract possessing sufficient antioxdant component. Thus,
it is concluded that methanol extract ofAsystasia gcingelica induced challenged
wistar albino rat. The findings from this study showed that administration of
Monosodium glutamate (MSG) caused an increased in the levels of serum
electrolyte ions concentration (Chloride, potassium, sodium, calcium and
bicarbonate ions).
