ABSTRACT

Acetaminophen is an antipyretic drug with deleterious effect when abused. This research was conducted to evaluate the hepatoprotective potentials of ethanol extract of G. longipetala leaves in acetaminophen-intoxicated Albino rats. Twenty (20) Wistar. albino rats were used for this research and were grouped into five equal groups Group 1 was the normal control and was fed feed and water only ad libitum while group 2 was administered acetaminophen only. Both groups 3, 4 and 5 were administered acetaminophen according to the respective weights of the rats with co-administration of 200, 600 and 1000 mg/kg b.w of the ethanol leaves extract, respectively. The administration lasted for a. period of 14 days and blood samples were collected via cardiac puncture The serum was used for biochemical assays using standard methods of analysis. The results show a non-significant (p>O.05) increase and decrease on the ALT and AST parameters when the 200 mg/kg b.w, 600mg/kg dose and 1000 mg/kg b.w. Of the extract were administered respectively, compared with the group administered with only acetaminophen. In the result for total proteins, there was a significant (p<O.05) decrease when both groups treated with the extract are compared with the acetaminophen-only group and a significant (p<O.05). increase when compared with the normal control. This study :identifies the limitation of the ethanol leaf extract of G. Iongipetaiain hepatoprotection at low doses and therefore, in order to identify some biological effects when consumed in higher concentrations, further works on other parameters should be encouraged
