ABSTRACT

In the past, poultry was kept practically by every household in Nigeria especially in the rural areas. Under this condition, the chicks were allowed to move about and scavenge for food and water. According to Obioha (1992), poultry business was introduced first to Nigeria around 1950 with the importation of selected breeds of exotic poultry, Rhode, Island Red, White leghorn and a number of other breeds and hybrids. Prior to this period, there were only subsistence production using local breeds scattered all over the country (lgboeii, 2000). It has been emphasized that the poultry industry has undergone a significant transformation since early sixties from a backyard; peasant and primitive household oriented husbandry of in descript breeds of semi wild chickens, to a cash oriented modern and large-scale poultry Obioha (1992). The poultry industry is vertically integrated which means the industry has a tremendous amount of control of their products. It is distinctly different from many uthet animal business (og. Rearing of birds, feeding, housing, husbandry and marketing of their product) and are capable of meticulously monitoring the entire process Ryan Meanier (2004). To this effect, Evans and Martins (1985) Identified two parts oi poultry industry as commercial sector located mainly in the urban areas and traditional poultry sector located in the rural areas.
