ABSTRACT.

This study was designed to carry out an economics of poultry production in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia state. In considering poultry industries the study is restricted to broiler and egg production enterprises. A random sampling approach was used to collect primary data from a random sample of 30 poultry farmer with the help of well-framed questionnaire. In the broiler production enterprise, the production cost per broiler was found to be N740.50k, the average selling price per broiler was found to be N810, while as the profit margin per broiler was found to be N69.50k, indicating that broiler production is profitable in the study area. In the egg production enterprise, the production cost per crate of egg was found to be N407.27k, the average selling, price per crate was found to be 366, while the profit margin in egg production was found to be N208645 in the study area, it equally shows that, there is profit in the egg production. In the production function analysis, the lead equations were chosen based on the statistical significance of the regression coefficients and the magnitude of the coefficient hey arc semi-log form and linear form for broiler and egg enterprise respectively. some of the problems affecting poultry production in the study area were found to be inadequate capital, in efficient feed supply, market problems etc. In view of the capital nature of the Poultry production, a good credit system should be provided by the government to improve the credit needs of the poultry producers in the study area.
