ABSTRACT

This study examined the Economics of Marketing palm oil in Akwa Ibom State. This study was necessary due to the unstable nature of palm oil marketing in the state. Akwa Ibom was purposefully selected due to its importance in Palm oil Production in Nigeria. The total of four L.G. As were selected using purposive sampling method, as a result of their role in palm oil in Akwa Ibom State. Two sets of questionnaires and a total of 120 respondents were used, Comprising, Producers, Consumers, Retailers and Wholesalers. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, Marketing margins and regression analysis. The result showed that there were fluctuating trends for both the wholesalers and Retailers in the study area. There was significant difference between the periods and markets in which Palmoil is marketed in Akwa Ibom. It was identified that marketing of Palm oil is efficient at all levels, but the net margin as a percentage of total investment is more with the wholesalers. It was identified that income does not affect the demand of Palm oil unlike price. Transport, price instability, adulteration, lack of uniform measures, and storage were found to be the major constraints in Palm oil marketing. Marketing integration is highly recommended in order to enhance the revenue of the producers.
