ABSTRACT
The study investigated the processing of cassava
into gari in Abia State. Ubakala and Uimtokpara were chosen froni the three
clans that make up Umuahia South Loca' Government Area. The specific objectives
were to determine the Scio economic characteristics of respondents, to identify
the processing steps of cassava into gari, to estimate the cost and returns of
gari processing, to determine the constraints iii gan processing then make
policy recommendations 1)ased oii the findings. Data were collected using questionnaire.
Secondaty data were also used. The questiomlaire was distributed to ninety-one
(9 1) respondents in the study area. Data was analyzed using descriptive
statistics. Netfarm income analysis was used to determine the cost and returns
of gari processing which showed that it is a profitable venture with a net
profit of 4825OO.5 I 6. The study recommends that government Sho1Il(l help
processors of gari in the study area is the area of transportation and in (lie
provision of processing machines to remove the drudgery involved in some
processing steps like peeling, grating and frying.
