ABSTRACT

The study tried to analyse the demand functions and estimate the relevant elasticity for beef in Port Harcourt Local Government Area. Price of beef, pork and goat and the per capita disposable income were each a statistically significant explanatory variable o per capita beef demand and their variability in terms of R2explained between 83 to 97 in per capita beef consumption. If the time variable had any influence on per capita consumption it was to increase it. Each meat type was a normal good. Three (3) functional models were tried out and the double-log (Cobb Douglas) was the lead equation and acceptable for further analysis. Own price elasticity indicate negative price effect while income elasticity show positive income effect ceteris paribus. The findings imply that more meat would be consumed with income increase. The results of the estimated elasticity show a low and inelastic demand for the product. Reduction in retail price of beef subject to some specified economic conditions would be advantageous and beneficial to both buyers and sellers, The study also suggests proper evaluation of the impact of price and income changes as this will guide policy makers in formulating good farm and economic policies for economic development.
