ABSTRACT

In this project titled "Determination of Water Intake Characteristics of Soils in Ohuhu in Umuahia North L.G.A", the inverse auger hole method will used to collect soil from the study area and the cylinder infiltrometer was used to run infiltration test. The particle size analysis of soil, intake time, intake depth, accumulated time, moisture content, bulk density, particle density and porosity measurement of the soil were determined as described by Soil Testing for Engineers.S.mitral:j.p Shukla Published by; Khanna publishers India, (2008). The average values for moisture content, infiltration rate, bulk density and particle density for the five locations are 13.24%, 16.8mm/hr, 1.19g/cm3and 2.36 respectively. From the graphs plotted in the appendix, the regression line equation for all the locations was derived. For Ekeogba, the regression line equation is I=1.8T°7809, for Nkwuegwu; I=2.4T' ', for Umuawa; I2.1T' 4792, for Okaiga; I=2.OT"°838, and for Uhuokwo; I=2.2T"°941. With the derived equations from all locations, the regression line equation can easily be derived. For example, assuming the time for basic infiltration rate of soils in Ekeogba is 2hrs, from the regression line equation (IKT); 1=2.4(120) .2611 thereby making the aim and objectives of the project achieved. It is recommended that the regression line equations obtained for Ohuhu should be used to predict intake rates, intake depths and intake time during water application process.
